The Gena Branscombe Project

Gena Branscombe was a prolific American composer, conductor, and educator whose work played a vital role in shaping choral and vocal music in the early twentieth century. A contemporary of Amy Beach and Florence Price, Branscombe wrote hundreds of compositions, many of them widely performed during her lifetime, before her music gradually fell out of the standard repertoire. Her output spans choral works, art songs, piano music, and orchestral writing, marked by lyricism, clarity of text setting, and a deep understanding of singers. Dan Ryan is the co-founder and artistic director of the Gena Branscombe Project, an initiative dedicated to recovering, digitizing, publishing, and performing Branscombe’s music, ensuring her work is once again heard, studied, and celebrated by contemporary performers and audiences.
